A puppy – is there anything as lovable, adorable, or huggable? Cute puppies are so often seen in the windows of pet shops and it is tempting to go in and further explore the puppies for sale at the establishment. Anyone who has ever set eyes on a puppy known how hard it is to let go and walk by, but sometimes – especially when you are looking to add a puppy to your household – this might be your best bet.
While this may sound like a mutually exclusive statement, it is important to understand that puppies for sale at pet shops most often come from reputable breeders, but this is not always the case. As a matter of fact, a puppy’s parents may sometimes actually linger in what is colloquially known as a “puppy mill.” These establishments often keep dogs in substandard conditions and essentially force the bitches to have one litter after the next – the results are sick animals, and the occasional skinny puppy that may not survive more than a few weeks. Staying away from this kind of puppy sale is in the best interest of the dogs. When you are ready to make the commitment to a puppy, visit your local animal shelter. There are bound to be a large number of available little dogs in need of loving homes. Additionally, check for an ad for a free puppy in your local paper. Sometimes a pet may have puppies and the owner is able to give away all the dogs to friends and family, and then will post an ad in the paper to give away the pet to a good home. Breeders are another option. Since you will be able to visit the breeder to pick out the animal, you will be able to ensure that you are not financially supporting a puppy mill. Once you have found the dogs of your dreams, think of some puppy names. Remember that even the smallest dog will eventually grow up, so make sure the name will grow with the little dog. Puppy training is next on your list of things to do. A properly trained puppy will result in a properly trained dog who will be a good companion for years to come. It is important to realize what might be cute with a little six pound dog will cease to be cute if perpetrated by a 60 pound hound. So train them young, and they will remain cute and adorable for their entire lives!
