What is an iTune? Can you download iTunes? Are there free iTunes? These and many other questions are oftentimes heard around the displays in stores that speak of this fascinating technology. If you are a bit of a sound junkie, then you have undoubtedly heard the term iTune bandied about by others and you might have wondered whether or not this kind of technology will truly bring about the sound revolution it is rumored to be. In essence, the term “iTunes for PC” refers to a software application that is little more than a digital media player.
In a sense, the idea of the iTune is proprietary to Apple which sought to carve out this niche of the market for its audio files. Interestingly, iTune does not only refer to audio files anymore, but many an iTunes download may actually also be a video file! It is hard to imagine Apple’s name without this application, and if you think about it, the iTune has proven to be a most enviable business model. Take the fact that free downloads of iTunes are available at iTunes stores – where you will also find files that require payment – and which may then be stored on a computer’s hard drive or other storage medium. Some of the files available for download at the iTunes store are so popular that their pricing is exceedingly reasonable and thus attracts a large clientele. Incidentally, in a moment of marketing genius, Apple has issued iTunes gift cards which now allow (mostly) teens to truly receive the kinds of gifts they are hoping for: iTunes music! Store bought iTunes – whether paid for with the gift card or a credit card – are now saved as digital music on the computer’s hard drive. From there they can be downloaded to the much sought after iPod. Since the iPod also supports video files, the aficionado will now be able to play music videos and even watch entire television programs! A free iTunes download can then entice a computer user to try the service, to explore different kinds of music, and to amass as much music as the computer’s storage devices will hold. Also available as iTunes for Windows – Apple soon realized that Macintosh did not have to be its only customer base – this technology is here to stay and it would be unthinkable to make do without it. By the way, did you know that many popular cell phones rely on iTunes for their different ring tones?
