Song lyrics are a bit of a double edged sword. While they are oftentimes believed to play second fiddle to a recognizable melody, the very fact that their meanings may be so offensive or sometimes just incredibly inane have led to many lyrics being actually a bit of an anchor that has weighed down many a song. In the past, many song writers have taken popular lyrics and reworked them into pop song lyrics, but with the rise of the popular genre named rap, lyrics have taken on a life of their own.

While in the past the lyrics were thought to be uplifting, thought provoking, or simply deeply philosophical, there has now emerged a new kind of disturbed lyrics that thrives on the negative effect they are having: the denigration of women, the hatred against law enforcement, the negativity toward society in general and certain races (usually any race other than the writer) in particular.

It is therefore not surprising that song lyrics are being eyed by parents with a renewed amount of suspicion. While in the past parents were known to lose their cool over Rock ‘n Roll – not just because of the lyrics but because of the provocative means of dancing and melodies – they are now looking at the free lyrics online that contain most all rap lyrics and feel their hairs rise in horror at the nastiness that seems to be synonymous with this movement. While this is one side of the coin, there is also another side.

A simple song lyric search will reflect that rap might not be the shining example of art, but in addition to the vile lyrics that spew little more than negativity, there is now a new movement underfoot that is taking issue with the oftentimes inane words that accompany heavily synthesized music. Many a former Rock ‘n Roller is now perusing free song lyrics and wondering what happened to the proud genre of music. Granted, many lyrics of the old songs were not so clever either, but while they were a bit inane at time, many modern pop lyrics are without equal when it comes to tepid sentiment. Add to this the fact that many a modern musician would not know what to do if their mike and instrument would not plug in, and you can well imagine why the double edged sword of song lyrics is ready to cut, slice and dice.
