Charles M. Schulz, the creator of the Peanuts cartoon, once said that “happiness is a warm puppy.” He was, of course, right! Dogs are the kinds of animals that can turn a rather crummy day into a day that ends on the right note. It is therefore not surprising that many workers have dog pictures hung inside their cubicles, to simply remind them of their best friends who are eagerly awaiting their return from work. Dogs are unique in the animal kingdom, in that they have completely and utterly accepted their human companions as not only providers but more often than not their leaders. While other animals may depend on humans for their food, dogs also depend on them for companionship.
This trust is naturally reciprocated, and even in young children the sign that reads “dogs for sale” inspires not only big eyes but undoubtedly pleas to mom and dad that end in the ubiquitous “I promise I will take care of him!” Dogs are rather undemanding creatures that will be happy and content when they know that they are led by their human companions, that they will be fed, and that there will be sufficient exercise. Of course, there are a large number of dog supplies available for purchase - dog beds, specialized bowls, clothing, and even an indoor dog kennel! Dog food is not restricted to simply one or two brands but literally takes up an entire section in your local supermarket. There are a wide variety of dog breeds and anyone desiring to live with dogs will be able to either purchase a dog or get one of the many free dogs advertised in the papers. Dog training will enable man and hound to live together companionably and the antics of funny dogs are bound to keep you entertained for hours on end. Since these animals live in the here and now, they do not hold grudges and every day is a new opportunity to do right by your four legged friend. Of course, it is important to do right by them, and plenty of exercise, healthy food, and water are required. Additionally, it is imperative to be the pack leader and ensure that the dog knows its place within the household. Then – and only then – will the dog feel safe, comfortable, and able to provide you with the kind of love and devotion that must have prompted Charles M. Schultz to make his famous quote.
